The Copenhagen Wheel, unveiled today by MIT students at the COP15 Climate Change Conference, may not look like anything special. But in reality, it’s a treasure trove of bicycle wheel technology, complete with a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), sensors, a smart lock, and a Bluetooth connection to the rider’s iPhone.

I like cold weather, because in a warm city like mine it’s unusual, different. But cold weather is not for working days. I want to be at home, on the sofa, with a hot drink and a blanket :)

“The new wheel uses a kinetic energy recovery system, the same technology used by hybrid cars, like the Toyota Prius, to harvest otherwise wasted energy when a cyclist brakes or speeds down a hill. With that energy, it charges up a battery inside the wheel’s hub.

The sleek red hub, called the Copenhagen Wheel, was to be unveiled Tuesday morning in Copenhagen. It can be retrofitted to any bike’s rear wheel, and it includes sensors that track air quality, a meter that logs miles and a GPS unit to track routes. All that data can be sent via Bluetooth to a rider’s smartphone and shared with others.”

On Growth and Form is an animation by Daniel Brown and it is part of the exhibition Decode: Digital Design Sensations at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. These flowers are generated with Flash actionscript code and look amazing. The petals are have textures derived from works from the museum archive including William Morris textiles and Kimono fabrics. — (via today and tomorrow)

Bridges of New York

I was going through my film archive today scanning classic images of New York City and I kept coming across these bridge shots which I started loving. They are so monolithic and when I find myself on one I always seem to shoot it out of respect for its sheer enormity. Unlike tunnels which are hidden from view, bridges are what take us in and out of the city in the most magnificent way. They’re a structure of function and beauty and none are as inspiring as the Bridges of New York.

Two of these images are digital the rest were taken with my 35mm Pentax and Kodak Tri-X 400 film.
